Etihad Airways and Africa World Airlines have entered into an agreement to enhance air connectivity with both the United Arab Emirates and West Africa and create new opportunities for passengers as well as cargo movements and loyalty benefits.
The airlines formalized the partnership by signing an Memorandum of Understanding signed in Accra. The agreement establishes a framework for codeshare agreements and interline arrangements as well as cargo collaboration and collaboration between their frequent flyer programs. These components are expected to be implemented in stages once carriers complete their operational and commercial procedures.
As soon as the interline agreement becomes operational the passengers will be able to purchase connected travel on one ticket. Etihad customers who travel through Accra will have access to Africa World Airlines’ domestic and regional network, whereas the Ghanaian passengers of the airline will be able connect via Abu Dhabi to Etihad’s global network with 118 destinations.
The alliance is expected to increase access to key West African cities served by Africa World Airlines. The network comprises Ghanaian destinations like Kumasi, Tamale and Takoradi as well as regional flights to Lagos as well as Abuja in Nigeria as well as Ouagadougou within Burkina Faso. This could allow traveling between Gulf, Ghana and neighbouring markets more convenient for travelers, tourists, and visiting families.
Cargo is an additional component of the deal. The airlines intend to connect exporters from Ghana and the rest of West Africa with Etihad Cargo’s capacity to ship internationally. The improved freight connections will help firms that ship agricultural products or manufactured goods as well as other goods that require time to reach markets across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Europe and beyond.
The carriers are also planning to broaden the opportunities for loyalty. Customers of their frequent-flyer programs could eventually get more options to earn rewards and redeem them between the two networks. The Memorandum of Understanding took effect on July 24 2026. This also gives Etihad the support for its plans for the start of direct flights from Abu Dhabi and Accra on March 24 2027. The new route will create an air connection for commercial flights between Accra, the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi and Ghana and Accra, with Africa World Airlines providing onward connections within the region.
Etihad’s Chief Revenue and Commercial officer, Arik De, described Ghana as one of the most vibrant aviation markets. He said that the partnership will bring Ghanaian business and travelers to Abu Dhabi and fast-growing international markets.
Africa World Airlines Chief Operating Officer Sohail Mahmood said the collaboration will provide customers of the airline with directly access to Etihad’s larger network, while providing more opportunities to Ghanaian travelers and international businesses.
For travelers, the phased rolling out should make booking easier luggage handling and connections. For companies, it can give more rapid entry to potential customers, and supply chains across multiple continents more effectively.
The agreement is part of Etihad’s larger African expansion strategy and increasing commercial relationship with the UAE as well as African markets. Through combining Etihad’s extensive long-haul network along with Africa World Airlines’ regional presence, the alliance aims to build a stronger travel and trade corridor that connects West Africa, the Middle East as well as major global destinations.
